Soaring temperatures meant flowers bloomed but fruit and vegetables wilted ahead of a village's horticultural show.

Bovingdon and District Horticultural Society held their annual show on June 30.

The number of floral exhibits greatly increased while the numbers in the vegetable section decreased due to the hot and dry weather.

The Doubleday Cup for Floral Art went to Glenys Welstead for her displays named Five Alive, Strictly Come Dancing and My Favourite Cup and Saucer.

Carole Coshan gained the most points in the vegetable and fruit sections, so was awarded the Bovingdon Horticultural Society Cup and the Banksian Medal.

The National Vegetable Society Medal was awarded to Mike Leon for his cucumber exhibit. The Mollie Aronson Cup for Rose

Exhibits and the Darley Ash Sweet Pea Cup were awarded to Caroline Walker and John

North respectively for their flower exhibits. Rod Pengelly received the Rosette for the best rose exhibit.

Valter Johansson won the Douglas King Cup for best picture for a shot he took in Oradour-sur-Glane in France.

Ann Rees was presented with the Langley Leisure Services Cup for her quilt.

Shirley Masterson took home The Crawley Cup for the most points in the preserves and cooking section.

Bovingdon Primary Academy Garden Club members entered broad beans and vases of Sweet William and also put on a display of garlic. The Junior Cup was won by Jio Kaur for his entry of three broad beans.

Jill Leon, who is standing down after producing the entry cards for all the exhibitors for many years, was given special thanks for her service.

The society’s autumn show will be held on September 8 in Bovingdon Memorial Hall.
