SUPPORTERS of Back Heathrow say it's time the five councils taking up a judicial review against a new runway at Heathrow respected the will of local people and MPs.

Executive director Parmjit Dhanda said:  "More than 100,000 local people support this project. The CBI and the TUC back it, too.

"Yet these councils have chosen to spend nearly £1m of over the past decade on campaign groups and expensive lawyers.”

Hillingdon is among the group of local authorities set to launch a legal bid for a judicial review, according to Transport Network.

It is joined by Richmond, Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham, Windsor and Maidenhead, plus Greenpeace and the Mayor of London.

The councils argue that an expanded Heathrow could not satisfy air qualityrequirements and object to the additional noise and costs.

Previous legal action against Heathrow expansion, under Labour in 2010, was successful when Lord Justice Carnwath said the public consultation process had been invalid as it was based on out-of-date figures.

The group has six weeks to file a challenge.

Cllr Ray Puddifoot, leader of Hillingdon Council, said: 'A third runway at Heathrow is simply untenable. This is a part of London where air pollution levels are already unlawful.

“The air quality will become significantly worse by adding a runway and all the traffic that goes with it. It seems this is obvious to everyone apart from the Government.

“'Heathrow expansion will have a devastating impact on local communities in Hillingdon.”
