I’m often asked what I enjoy most about being the MP for Watford, and my answer is that some days I’m able to help a resident with a personal problem that may seem small to others, but to them means the world.

I will always remember one of my first meetings as the MP was with an elderly lady whose heating hadn’t been working for a week. All I did was ring the company on her behalf, but it meant that someone came round and solved the issue straight away. It’s at times like this you really feel you are making a difference.

That’s why I wanted to take this opportunity to mention what I can do to help people, and to encourage residents to contact me if they want to discuss any issue, be it local, national or international.

My aim is to ensure that I regularly hear directly from my constituents, so I know what their concerns are. It’s important to me that I provide a good service for people who have problems they want me to help with.

I hold weekly advice surgeries and have done since 2009. I can’t promise that I can always resolve the issue, but I do try my best.

It’s my responsibility, but also my pleasure, to help people who find that they can't, for whatever reason, sort out a problem themselves.
