THE family of a man killed by a hit-and-run driver have spoken of the devastation they are facing living so close to the scene of his death.
Sid Irons, 67, was killed just a few steps away from his home in Victoria Road, Ruislip, when he was hit by a car on Saturday. He was left for dead in the road.
Sid, who was a regular at the Black Bull pub, in Victoria Road, where he took part in karaoke every Friday, was crossing the road on his way home from his night out when he was struck by a car.
He was taken to Hillingdon Hospital suffering from multiple injuries but but died shortly after arrival.
His wife, Linda, 65, was worried that Sid was late coming back from the Black Bull, but she didn't know what had happened to him. Police officers looking for witnesses knocked on her door in the early hours of Saturday morning.
She told them that Sid had not come home and she was taken to the hospital where she identified her husband's body.
Linda, said: "I am just devastated. It makes me angry to think the driver did not stop. The cars travel so fast along Victoria Road.
"It is going to be so hard to live on the doorstep of where he was killed because we have lived there together for almost 35 years. Just seeing where it happened is so difficult."
Sid, who grew up in Kent, moved to Sudbury Hill where he worked for IBM in Greenford. He later worked for Express Dairies in Victoria Road.
He and Linda would regularly walk their two dogs in South Ruislip, and were due to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in June.
Daughters Rebecca Wren, 31, and Jane Giffin, 35, and son Dorian Irons, 38, are finding it very hard to come to terms with losing their father.
Rebecca, said: "We miss him so much, we just want him back. It is so hard to accept because his life was just snatched from him.
"The driver never gave him a chance, the worst thing is that they did not stop. We never know, if they would have helped, things could have been different."
Sid was involved in a lot of youth activities organised by St Andrews Lutheran Church, in Whitby Road.
The pastor at the church, Reverend Kurt Van Fossan, 51, said: "I have known Sid for more than 20 years and he has spent a lot of his time helping the youth of the community.
"Through the church we organise a lot of youth clubs and family days out and Sid has been devoted to keeping the youth involved. "
Rev Van Fossan, who also lives in Victoria Road, added: "The speed at which cars travel along the road is much too fast.
"With it being a main road I am not sure if speed bumps can be introduced.
"But there definitely needs to be more controlled crossings along the stretch of Victoria Road where we live."
n Police are looking for a woman who may have information about the incident.
A woman aged between 25 and 35 went into Uxbridge Police Station on Saturday at 7.15pm and told officers she knew something about the collision.
She then left the station without giving any details and the police are appealing for her to contact them as soon as possible.
Anyone with information can call the collision investigation unit on 0208 998 5319 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
