Meeting to save Hayes Carnival

A PUBLIC meeting has been called to discuss the future of a traditional carnival in Hayes.

John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington has launched a campaign in protest at possibility Hayes Carnival could be axed.

It was suggested by Hillingdon Council officers that the parade would be held in October, alongside BigFest, a street carnival in Uxbridge town centre.

Residents and politicians were shocked at the proposal.

Mr McDonnell is calling for confirmation that the carnival is secure, not just this year but in the future too.

He has organised a public meeting to get more support for his campaign.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 2pm at Uxbridge Community Campus, in Coldharbour Lane, Hayes.

Labour councillors in Hillingdon have also started a petition against scrapping the carnival which can be signed at www.savehayescarnival.co.uk.

Will the results of the poll that showed over 60% in favour of moving the carnival be discussed of does the MP think he knows best as usual? Anyway, the Council have said it is going ahead in July so what's the issue?

What poll would that be then? No-one would vote to have a carnival parade in OCTOBER!

Who would the pollsters be then? 60% = 3 out of 5 of the administration?

There was a poll running on this Hillijngdon Times website at the beginning of the week that showed over 60% in favour. It was mentioned my Ms Mistrey in her article but the statistics were different. I have no idea if it was open to fraud, certinaly I voted once but each log in remembered my IP address so it was to an extent protected? I guess the administration could have got people to log in though to skew the results?

I'm sorry but if we allow yet another thing be closed down, moved sold or just stopped in Hayes we will soon have nothing left. The Hayes carnival has been part of Hayes life for more than my 47years and should not be stopped, what is needed is more groups and organisations Belonging to Hayes to stand up and say Yes we want to be part of this, Get a float for the parade, Join in the fun. at worse you would have free advertising for your cause/company, or the Best thing be part of the On good thing Hayes has got left for it.. Please come to the meeting on Saturday 10th May at 2pm at hayes campus, coldharbor lane Hays, and show those who be that we want and need our Carnival !!. Thank You

The Hayes Carnival IS worth saving if it can get back to the levels of support that I remember from only 10-12 years ago. More recently it is merely a fair in Barra Hall Park and has little to do with the community - more floats, more community groups etc are needed to build it into a mini Notting Hill event. If it doesn't improve support it will ultimately die a death regardless of any efforts (or not) by the Council

Who are you Alan...one of the local tories..if the council wanted the carnival to thrive then it would provide lorries and drivers to the community groups at nil cost for their floats. Have you tried to hire a flat back lorry recently? its ridiculously expensive and the community groups are not made of money, UNLIKE THE COUNCIL.

I am not one of the local Tories (are there any in Barnhill!?) I just think the carnival needs a more active management. I am not sure it is for the Council to provide lorries - what about local businesses etc. One of the local freight companies usually helps out and we are awash with big businesses around Hayes. It would be better if the local Council were a minor part of the carnival then the local people would own it and perhaps more would attend.
