Employee awarded for helping save Cherry Lane Cemetery

SATISFIED residents have nominated three of the winners of the first council staff award for 2009/10, showing their appreciation for the hard work that council staff do in delivering their services.

John Purcell, who works for Breakspear Crematorium, won the Employee of the Quarter award for going above and beyond his day job, demonstrating passion and commitment, by being instrumental in organising the Save Cherry Lane Cemetery march in May 2009.

John was nominated by resident Edna La Mothe, vice chairwoman of the Save Cherry Lane Cemetery campaign, who described him as an outstanding council employee who is always willing to help others and put residents first.

The Employee Recognition Awards were presented by the Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Puddifoot and chief executive, Hugh Dunnachie.

The Team of the Quarter Award went jointly to two teams, both nominated by Hillingdon residents. The West Drayton Refuse Team won their award for being a caring and considerate team that strives to put the residents they serve at the heart of everything they do by ensuring a healthy, safe and clean environment in the roads they work in.

The other winners were Janice Maddock and Zelda Parker from the Childcare Development Team for going the extra mile to give childminders additional confidence and ensure they are able to access any training they require, explaining paperwork to those who do not speak English as a first language and supporting users by setting up clubs and offering guidance.

Councillor Puddifoot said: "I am proud to be the Leader of a council where so many hard working and dedicated staff so willingly go out of their way to help our residents. The contributions and attitudes of the winners are an inspiration to everyone working for or with Hillingdon Council and I personally thank each of them."
