Waste fight takes off

BALLOONS carrying a health warning message were released as part of an anti-incinerator campaign.

Fifty black balloons with the slogan "Health warning in Hillingdon" were released from Uxbridge Town centre by members of the West London Stop The Incinerator (WLSTI) campaign in an experiment to see how far they would travel.

Dave Ashworth, of WLSTI, said: "The main message we are sending is not only does it carry our message about stopping the incinerator but it also brings home how far pollution travels."

The incinerator, which will be the largest in Europe, is being proposed by Grundon Waste Management in nearby Colnbrook, but WLSTI say residents in Hillingdon will suffer, as they believe there is a 17-mile zone which will be affected by emissions should the incinerator go ahead.

In September, the West London Waste Authority (WLWA) voted to go out to tender to other companies instead of signing a lucrative contract with Grundon which would have allowed 100,000 tonnes of waste a year for the next 20 years to be burnt.
