Top education honours for Guru Nanak

A SCHOOL in Hillingdon is celebrating after getting the second highest score in the country for value added performance.

The school, Guru Nanak Secondary School in Springfield Road, Hayes, was also in the top 40 schools in the country for sustained improvement.

John McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, said: "The improvement in the success rate of the Guru Nanak School is a credit to the hard work of pupils, teachers and parents.

"I am proud that their work has been recognised and that our young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential."

"An amazing 97 per cent of pupils passed five or more GCSEs (and equivalents) with an A* to C grade.

The Guru Nanak School has the additional distinction of, along with a school in Lincoln, achieving the highest percentage of successful pupils in England.

Rt Hon Ruth Kelly MP, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills said: "I would like to congratulate the Guru Nanak School for its success in being one of the top one hundred most improved schools in the country.

"The improvement is a credit to the hard work of the pupils, parents and staff. It is also a result of the investment this government has put into our schools."

Mr Rajinder Sandhu, headmaster at the school, told the Times: "We are grateful for all the kind comments and we would particularly like to thank John McDonnell for all his support.

"We really do have the best staff here at the school, and recognise their efforts, as well as the efforts of the community, parents and the LEA."

School standards Minister Stephen Twigg welcomed the progress of London schools.
