UXBRIDGE Tube Station is undergoing a major revamp as part of work done by a partnership between London Underground and Metronet Rail.
Refurbishments began on June 30 to bring the station into the 21st century while preserving the 1930s Charles Holden design, whose structures grace much of the Piccadilly Line.
Uxbridge MP John Randall said: "The underground is very important to the life of Uxbridge town centre. There aren't many stations where you come out right in to the centre of the town it is an important focal point.
"I am delighted to learn it will be refurbished and that the heritage features are being protected."
Metronet is carrying out the work in consultation with Hillingdon Borough Council and English Heritage to ensure the original 1930s features are not affected. The station was awarded Grade II listing in 1983 and a panel of stained glass windows, railway clocks and indicator boards are being preserved.
Modern electronic information displays will be installed to bring the station up to standard. In line with work carried out by Metronet on nine different Tube lines, Uxbridge station will be made smarter and safer with deep cleaning of walls, ceilings and floors, digital CCTV and passenger help points.
There will also be a new disabled toilet installed.
Metronet is responsible for maintaining and upgrading two-thirds of the Underground and will work with London Underground to modernise Uxbridge station.
The partnership will be responsible for upgrading and maintaining nine of the 12 lines on the entire network and will spend £17 billion during its 30-year contract.
The work is due to be completed in Autumn 2006.
