Building support

Liberal Democrat president Simon Hughes MP visited Ealing on Friday to launch the party's "Lib Dems Say No Tram" local election campaign.

Speaking to the Ealing Times Mr Hughes said there was "no reason" why the council should continue to be Labour-run, and that a high turn-out was crucial if the Lib Dems were to do well.

"Our hope is to take control away from Labour," he said. "They don't have to have it all their own way. It is a borough where there is no reason why it should be a labour council. The power is in the hands of the people of Ealing."

Mr Hughes said the party had been building a basis of support in the borough, and expected them to win seats, although refused to comment on exactly how many.

Opposition to the West London Tram is expected to be a major issue in the local elections on May 4.
