A fun day at Ruislip Lido on Saturday raised money for the Royal British Legion as it celebrates its 90th anniversary.

Activities included a tug-of-war, historic vehicle display and barbecue, with the highlight being the Lido Lap. People entered the fun run for £6, with all proceeds going to the Legion.

Participants included those in fancy dress, Hillingdon councillors and parents pushing prams, as well as more serious athletes. The fastest lap was by Joseph Doyle, 13, of Bishopshalt School, Hillingdon, in 9 min 27 sec.

Hillingdon Mayor Mary O'Connor entered into the spirit of the day by completing the lap with Isobel Gilham, 7, of St. Catherine’s School, West Drayton. The mayor declared her lap time as 30 minutes.

The youngest people to take part were Zoe Knight, 3, and Kendal Bow, 4, accompanied by their families.

There was also a run in which participants completed as many laps of the Lido as they could. Christopher Posser, a member of Hillingdon Athletics Club, completed at least six laps and was still going as I left!

Members of the Legion's Riders Branch rode their motor cycles to the fun day, as they do to events all over the world. They are all enthusiastic motor cyclists committed to raising money for and awareness of the Legion’s work.

The idea was born in 2004 in a pub and the seven founders have now grown to nearly 5,000 members. The group raised £155,000 for the Poppy Appeal last year and has the support of the Prince of Wales.

A series of events are happening in Hillingdon this month to mark the anniversary, including a coffee morning and a tea dance. For more information please visit www.hillingdon.gov.uk

Almost 9.5 million people in the UK are eligible for help from the Royal British Legion and, since 2003, it has financially supported 10,000 veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
