HOMELESS people on the streets of Hillingdon are being given borough help for the sixth year running.

The borough’s winter night shelter has resettled a total of 14 homeless men this year, helping them off the streets and into accommodation.

The shelter, staffed by 60 volunteers and council staff, has been helped by donations from concerned residents. Guru Nanak School donated items for a fifth consecutive year.

The shelter, a partnership between the borough and Trinity Homeless Projects, works to provide a bed, food and support for men through the coldest of months.

Trinity also aims to make sure the men remain in accommodation by helping them find into jobs for the when they are back on their feet.

Shelter user Billy said: “I’ve been on the streets since 2009. I found out about the shelter from a friend of mine. It has made a lot of difference to me.”

Shelter manager Annette Kirkeboe paid thanked the volunteers who supported the shelter and cause.

“We had more people offer their time than we needed,” she said. “People have been cleaning, cooking, providing food and clothes. It’s been great to see.”

In 2010, all 25 men who used the centre were found accommodation. Last year, of the 11 men supported by the shelter, nine were found accommodation with the remaining two making their own arrangements.
