THE success of Hillingdon Women’s Centre has led to it outgrowing its home.

The charity, dedicated to the needs of women in the borough, is raising funds to relocate, as the current location in Long Lane is not big enough to deliver the services it wants to offer.

Fund-raising efforts to cover running costs, training for volunteers and to pay the regular bills are also ongoing.

“We know we would be more accessible transport-wise if we were located in Uxbridge,” said centre co-ordinator Jill Lynch.

“Women in the borough would benefit by HWC having a proper training room or meeting rooms, while other women’s groups in the borough could also use the facilities at a new centre.”

The centre has been told it needs at least £300,000 to buy a new building in Uxbridge but will have only £200,000 after selling the current property.

It also faces the task of sourcing a new building and gaining planning permission as well as meeting running costs – quite a tall order.

HWC aims to empower women and help them back to work, to relieve poverty, support victims of domestic abuse and create a space for women to meet.

HWC will take part in Hillingdon Arts Week, where it will hold an open exhibition on Friday, June 8, from 11-3pm for women to view and exhibit artwork.

It will also take part in Hayes Carnival as part of a Women In the Community Project in July.

Ms Lynch said the fund-raising will help to provide confidence-building courses.

“We could provide more and develop new projects to meet the needs of women aged 18-plus in the borough,” she added.
