Torchlight rally to fight third runway
PROTESTORS against the planned third runway at Heathrow are calling for all residents to join a torchlight rally this weekend.
The parade, this Sunday, October 30, will follow the route of the proposed runway along Sipson Lane and Harmondsworth Lane.
The route has two starting points, one at Sipson Meadow, Sipson Lane, and one at Heathrow Primary School for people who cannot walk as far.
The action has been planned by the No Third Runway Action Group (NoTRAG), and comes the day before the deadline for the public to respond to BAAs draft interim master plan for expansion at the airport.
Residents are asked to be either at Sipson Meadow or Heathrow Primary School for 4.30pm. The march will start at 5pm.
Christine Shilling, of NoTRAG, told the Times: "We are calling on all residents to join us in our rally, so we can get this simple message across to BAA. Hands off our communities, hands off our schools, our churches and our homes. Leave us in peace."
BAA published its plan in June this year on how it wants Heathrow to develop, saying it needed to expand to satisfy increasing passenger growth.
But the expansion would wipe out whole communities in Hillingdon, increase pollution, air traffic and road traffic.
The Government gave the go ahead for expansion at Heathrow in a White Paper in 2003, but only if the airport can meet acceptable air pollution levels in the next ten to 15 years.
The rally will end with speeches in the centre of Harmondsworth Village by Cllr Rod Dubrow-Marshall, leader of the Labour Group, Richard Barnes, Hillingdon member of the Greater London Assembly, Father Phil Hughes, parish priest of St Mary the Virgin Church Harmondsworth and Heathrow Airport Chaplain, and Baroness Sarah Ludford, member of the European Parliament.
Christine Shilling said: "This is a real family event, and we want to encourage everyone to come out. There will be glow sticks for children to carry, as well as around 300 glow sticks for adults, but we are asking that adults all bring torches with them.
"The event will end after the speeches at the two village pubs, and there will also be a bus in the centre of Harmondsworth to bus people back to their cars later if they need it."
