Turn on a Muslim TV channel of late you would be forgiven for thinking you were watching some sort of shopping channel.

Muslim TV channels have gone into over drive this Ramadhan and year upon year this has got worse. It is important for channels to do their best for highlight the plight of the poor and needy but you have to admit recently things have got a little out of hand.

Each channel in my opinion is trying to outdo the other and there is a tendency now for viewers to switch off completely. Ramadhan is a month when some Muslims do decide to turn off the mainstream channels and turn to the Muslim channels for education and knowledge.

We want to be enlightened at this time of year with lively debate and discussion or a simple message of how Islam has benefitted the world.

I recently flicked through the Muslim channels and sadly not one had an education programme on. What I found was a presenter almost obsessed with raising funds. It had got almost ridiculous on some channels where presenters and guests went from one subject to the next and were determined to make you part with your money for their chosen charity.

Has it really come to this?

Flashed across my screen was a constant reminder of the channel’s charity bank account. There were constant reminders of other people who donated vast amounts of sums.

I was told many things throughout these reminders but very few actually told me where the money would be spent. I wanted to help I really did but this hard-sell tactic was a complete put off.

I am sure the Muslim TV channels are sincere in their efforts. I cannot question this whatsoever.

But the constant barrage of TV appeals is becoming a big turn off and actually drives people away from these channels at a time when they turn to them for a little comfort and knowledge.
