LAST night businesses took part in a special event to decide what action needed to be taken to safeguard Wycombe's future.

The Business Vision 2008 event, run by The Wycombe and South Bucks Chamber of Commerce took place in Adams Park, Hillbottom Road.

Around 40 representatives of companies in the area gathered to discuss key issues facing Wycombe.

Their comments were then translated into a series of action points that the Chamber will incorporate into its agenda over the coming year.

Among the points for discussion were issues surrounding the environment and community, infrastucture, and business itself.

Alastair Pike, president of the Chamber branch said afterwards: "I think the evening has gone very well. It's been a very worthwhile exercise that enables us to leave here with a lot of useful material as part of the Vision statement.

"We're very grateful to those who came out to give their views and opinions. I think the issues that arose were very similar to those in all town centres, but as a consequence there will be different angles and emphases that one must give focus to."

There were discussions over the problems of Handy Cross roundabout, of parking difficulties in town, and of Buckinghamshire New University's role in Wycombe's business world.

Among the ideas that the Chamber was left to consider was the possibility of giving the High Street side of town a more distinct identity in the wake of Eden.

It was suggested it be renamed "Wycombe Old Town," and developed it into an area boasting smaller, independent craft shops.

There were also calls for park and ride car parks to be sited at all the major access points into town.

No need to rename it. The names “Wycombe” and “Eden” are quite good enough. Once the people realise the complex does not sell what they want for their everyday lives they will return to the High Street to buy essential goods.

Today I went to the new department to buy a light bulb. Do you think they sell them? Read my blog to find out. Click on the “Opinion” link on the menu on the left then click on “Readers Bucks Blog”.

If the high Street area needs renaming to produce a 19C impression, perhaps Back Alley or even Wycombe Bottom would be more suitable.

Why not rename the complex instead? The names “Back Alley” and “Wycombe Bottom” are most fitting for the monstrous £300m construction!

Perhaps a preferable name could be Wycombe End ; or as Ivor seems to prefer End of Wycombe . 'Bottom ' can't be used as Ivor uses it to talk out of

As to Brazilian / Salsa dancers and objections thereto : Eden is a Temple to Mammon ie it's there for you to spend your cash in and is for ALL people regardless of whatever. If you don't wish get involved or visit, don't.
You don't see many Sally Army bods in pubs , do you ?
