Children's champion tours Hillingdon
THE Children’s Commissioner for England, Maggie Atkinson, visited Hillingdon on a fact-finding last week.
The Commissioner, who champions the rights and interests of children and young people, toured the Civic Centre, Charville Lane Residential Home in Hayes and Heathrow Airport, meeting council officials, young people and UK Border Force officials.
Dr Atkinson and three of her team discussed the welfare and safeguarding issues facing unaccompanied young people when they arrive in Britain through Heathrow and during their stay in residential and foster homes.
With Heathrow on its patch, Hillingdon is a major gateway for children entering the country. Dr Atkinson and her team have been holding similar discussions with other councils which act as entry points to the country.
Charville Lane is an 11-bed mixed-sex home, mainly for unaccompanied children who arrive at Heathrow. It provides support for young people between the ages of 12 and 18 for up to six months, though not all stay that long.
