DESPITE the persistent drizzle and plunging temperatures, it is officially Spring – a time traditionally known for new beginnings. Try something different this week, with my five suggested events in the Hillingdon area for under £5.

Monday, March 3

If you fancy yourself as a budding Elvis Presley or Brenda Lee, shake rattle and roll yourself down to Harefield Cricket Club. An Absolute Beginners jive class begins at 7.45pm (it’s advisable to arrive 15 minutes early) before doors are flung open at 8.30 for social rock 'n' roll until 11. Entry costs £5.

Tuesday, March 4

Curtain Up! Uxbridge Library Playreading Group takes place on the first Tuesday of every month. Kids can take part by reading the lines of a character, or just listening as the story unfolds. From 2.30-5pm, entry is free and includes refreshments.

Thursday, March 6

To celebrate World Book Day, children are invited to head down to Oak Farm Library, Hillingdon, to create their favourite book characters from 3.45-4.45. The library’s story tree also encourages youngsters to discover new literary friends. Booking is required on 01895 556242.

Thursday, March 6 to Saturday 8

Uxbridge High Street is the venue for a Continental Market. It might be worth bringing more than £5 to stock up on food items and household goods!

Sunday, March 9

As mentioned elsewhere in our news list, cyclists can take part in an organised ride, visiting steam railways across the South East. Choosing from a 50km, 100km or 200km route, participants will meet at Ruislip Lido before heading off. Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway and Southall Rail Centre are just some of the sights on this tour. Sign up at www.steamride.co.uk
