AS the curtains close on yet another month, Hillingdon residents can work their way towards peak fitness, or get involved with commemorating the centenary of World War One.

Here are my top five suggested events in the borough for under £5.

Saturday, March 29

Traffic Free Cycling Club – TFCC – is inviting cyclists to join them on a 30-mile ride from West Drayton to Watford. Meeting outside the train station at 10am, the seven-hour ride will take in scenes along the Grand Union canal, with refreshment stops at Denham Tea Room, Rickmansworth Lock and Cassiobury Park.

Sunday, March 30

Those in need of some fitness motivation can work their way towards running 5km in just five weeks. Every Sunday, PWN Running Club will be working with runners to help build up their distance and performance. Bring your running shoes and meet at the Ickenham Village Pump at 9.30am.

Monday, March 31

Mini Maniacs music and dance class takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for kids aged from new-born to five. On Mondays, groups meet at Ruislip Stables for an interactive session filled with games, songs and activities. Attendance is free for babies attending their first class – afterwards, pay termly so each class works out at £5. Visit www.hillingdon.gov.uk/index.jsp?articleid=28086 for more information.

Tuesday, April 1

Make April the month of love by taking part in Harefield Library’s Love Letter Cityread Competition. To mark 100 years since the beginning of World War One, the library is hosting an adult creative writing competition, asking locals to write a love letter from the trenches, or from back home. Deadline is the end of April.

Friday, April 4

Author Rupert Colley will be at Oak Farm Library to talk about World War One and his new kindle book, History in an Hour, which aims to cover all the key points of the war in one short read. Booking is required on 01895 55624, and refreshments will be provided.
