ONE property is being reclaimed every week from housing cheats.

As part of its crackdown on housing tenancy fraud, more than 50 properties have been returned to the Hillingdon Council’s housing stock over the last year.

Tenants were caught sub-letting the property or no longer living there.

Once the council reclaims the property, it means those in genuine need can be helped and given permanent accommodation.

Cllr Jonathan Bianco, cabinet member for finance, property and business services, said: “We take a very dim view of anyone trying to cheat the system and we will use all powers available to reclaim money or property fraudulently claimed from us.

“Our corporate fraud investigation team has an excellent track record of reclaiming these properties and, with the help of residents, we can continue to do so.

“If you have any suspicions about a property, whether you think it isn’t being lived in by the tenant or that it is empty, please let us know.”
