FORMER Cabinet minister Lord Baker joined Bryan Berry, principal of the new Heathrow Aviation Engineering University Technical College last week, to ‘top out’ the new £10m college being built by BAM Construction.

Lord Baker, former Education Secretary, is chairman of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, which pioneers setting up UTCs throughout the country.

Trowelling in the last bit of concrete, he said: “Students who enrol from September will benefit from links to major employer partners including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Heathrow Airport and RAF Northolt .

"They will receive unrivalled work-related experience within the aviation engineering sector, which will open up opportunities for further study, apprenticeships and employment.”

The design of the building, at Northwood, confirms the UTC’s engineering specialism at its heart. A central atrium will overlook the engineering workshops, which house the latest specialist equipment; ensuring engineering is always on display.

Mr Berry said: “After years in planning, our new college is now firmly ‘out of the ground’. What a fantastic asset to education provision for young people in this area.”
