HILLINGDON is among the 10 worst boroughs in London for giving people the NHS Health Check, according to a new report from Diabetes UK.

Just 5.3 per cent of people aged 40-74 in the borough received an NHS Health Check during March-December 2013, according to report.

Only eight London boroughs reached fewer people. Bottom was Croydon, with an uptake of only 1.6 per cent.

The uptake of NHS Health Checks in Hillingdon is significantly less than the 11.25 per cent of people in this age range that Diabetes UK says should be getting them.

However, it is better than in the same period of the previous year, when only 3.2 per cent received checks.

The programme assesses people for their risk of Type 2 diabetes and other serious conditions, such as heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and dementia.

The programme was previously run by the NHS, but this report covers the first period for which local government had responsibility for it.

The charity now wants to see progress in the borough.

Roz Rosenblatt, Diabetes UK’s regional manager for London, said: “Checks have the potential to make a big difference to the health of people in Hillingdon.”
