THIS week, there is a whole heap of outdoor activities and events for Hillingdon residents, with cycle rides, art exhibitions and miniature railway rides all up for grabs.

Here are my top five suggested items in the borough for under £5.

Monday-Saturday, June 2-7

Southlands Arts Centre, West Drayton, is home to the Southlands summer exhibition all week. It features a host of work from professional and amateur artists from all over Hillingdon. Entry is free. For more information, visit

Wednesday, June 4

Uxbridge College is holding its first Summer Hayes Festival between 2 and 5.30pm. Held at the college campus in Coldharbour Lane, Hayes, it includes free family games, beauty treatments, choir performances and pony rides.

Saturday, June 7

The first outing of 2014 for Ickenham Miniature Railway, which will run on the first Saturday of the month until December 6. Rides cost just 50p per person and will run between midday and 5pm.

Saturday, June 7

Northwood Craft Market offers something for all the family – from hands-on crafts for kids, to household accessories and handmade items for adults. The market will be at Methodist Church Hall, Oaklands Gate, between 10am and 2pm. Admission is free.

Sunday, June 8

A four-hour led cycle tour around Hillingdon takes in some of the borough’s most notable buildings, all of national, architectural or historic interest. The free tour involves on-road riding and leaves from Uxbridge station at 10am.
