A BRITISH Airways apprentice from Hayes has won the Institute of Travel and Tourism’s Apprentice of the Year award.

Atish Sahota was recognised for his hard work and professionalism as he embarks on a promising career at the airline.

British Airways will recruit more than 175 people to apprenticeship schemes this year. With up to 12 programmes available - from engineering to financial services to information technology - there is an apprenticeship to suit every skill set and ambition. All the schemes start with an induction programme and offer support, guidance and on-the-job experience throughout the two-year duration.

Atish is on BA’s head office apprentice scheme. This programme is designed to introduce candidates to the world of business support in a busy, customer-focused corporate environment. Atish was in the first intake of apprentices in October 2012. He has worked in several departments around the airline and is on his final placement in the global services division at IAG, British Airways’ parent company.

He hopes to complete his Level 4 NVQ in Business and Administration later this year, when his two year apprenticeship comes to an end.

Claire Steiner, director and chair of education and training at the Institute of Travel and Tourism said: “Atish is a fabulous ambassador for British Airways and its apprenticeship programme. He is a great example of someone who has worked hard, demonstrating great commitment and ability.”

Atish said: “I have achieved so much in the last few months – from organising induction programmes for graduates, to managing changes to supplier contracts, and helping to raise £3000 for Comic Relief, which BA supports.”
