WITH the world marking the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One, it could not be a more poignant time for everyone to remember the sacrifices made for the freedom of future generations.

St Helen’s sixth-form student Maya Freiman has been encouraging this through her work with the Imperial War Museum as a volunteer Youth Panel Member.

She is just about to begin her second year on the panel, visiting the museum every three to four weeks for an entire day on a Saturday.

The panel is responsible for advising the museum on what it should be providing for young people, running museum events and assisting with marketing campaigns and projects.

Maya’s role this year has included working closely with the curators to write family captions for the exhibition and to help design their visual impact.

She also helped plan the Lights Out campaign in August.

This was a national event in which people and iconic public landmarks and buildings were encouraged to switch off their lights to commemorate the outbreak of war.

Over the summer, Maya was awarded 12 A* grades at GCSE and is going on to study four A-levels in biology, chemistry, maths and history.

She is interested in the natural sciences and hopes to do further studies in this area.

She is also heavily involved in school activities. These include founding the Upper School ‘Whoopsy Daisy’ magazine (the daisy is the school emblem) with one of her friends, and being part of the RAF section of the CCF, where she has been promoted to the rank of lance corporal.

Next year she will be in charge of leading her own flight of cadets.

Headmistress Dr Mary Short said: “We are delighted our girls get so involved with co-curricular and local community activities.

“It really shows the full breath of our students’ abilities and interests.”
