HIGH-PERFORMING sports teams, dedicated volunteers and remarkable athletes who excelled over the past 12 months were recognised at the Mayor of Hillingdon's annual Awards for Sporting Achievement.

Sports club of the year: Hillingdon Swimming Club

A friendly club run by volunteers providing training from beginners to international level to more than 230 children. In the past year, the club came third at the National Age Group Championships and were top in the Middlesex championship, as well as having three swimmers qualify for Commonwealth Games trials.

Clive Hamilton Award for Outstanding Volunteer: Dave Wardle, Hillingdon Triathlon

Chair of Hillingdon Triathletes for 30 years, Dave Wardle organises 32 races a year, as well as coaching swimming and cycle training sessions for club members. Through Dave's work the club has grown substantially over the past five years, running events to attract newcomers and novice athletes, such as the Grassman Triathlon, and numerous aquathlons and duathlons. The most recent one attracted 150 children and 100 adults.

Young Volunteer Award (joint winners): Mikila Carter and Ellen Clarabut

Mikila and Ellen are both platinum ambassadors with the Youth Sport Trust and have organised numerous sporting events, which in total have got more than 600 different pupils involved in a sporting activity over the last two years. They increased the profile of Olympic and Paralympic values through speaking at assemblies, primary conferences and award ceremonies. Both also regularly give up their lunchtimes to volunteer in PE clubs.

Sports coach of the Year: Dave George, Slipstreamers Cycling Club

Dave co-ordinates a team of 37 coaches, 16 adult volunteers and 11 young helpers, as well as coaching all cycling disciplines. This year, Dave's coaching led Sam Henning to win the GHS National Time Trial championship, just 18 months after taking up the sport. He also helped 10 Slipstreamers get places at the Regional School of Racing and three an Olympic Development Apprenticeship.

School Team of the Year: St Helen's School swim team

Five girls competed in the National Schools Relay Championships for primary schools last June in Sheffield. The team won the freestyle relay and the medley relay to become national champions in both events. They were also awarded the Girls Team of the Day award. All girls are members of Hillingdon Swimming Club.

Sports Team of the Year: Hillingdon borough U14s cricket team

The team won the London Boroughs Championship with a representative squad made up from clubs across the borough. The team remained undefeated through the tournament.

Disability Sports Person: Marc McCarroll, wheelchair tennis

After competing in the London Paralympic Games, Marc McCarroll has gone on to win several tournaments and beat top 10-ranked players. He is now ranked 11 in the world and is the British No.2.

Young Disability Sports Person (joint winners):

Kavindu Ranasinghe, panathlon multi-sports and Matthew Jones, cricket and rugby Kavindu Ranasinghe is 10 and has cerebral palsy with spastic quadriplegia. When he joined Coteford Junior School three years ago, he was unable to walk with a frame but he was encouraged to take part in disability sports. Through determination, he has improved and can now walk with the aid of a walker. He is part of Hillingdon Panathlon and was a co-winner of Wembley National Stadium Trust Primary Aged Achievers Award, which celebrates some of Panathlon's youngest competitors.

Matthew Jones plays for and captains Middlesex Cricket's junior and senior Physical & Learning Disability teams. A great role model, Matthew also plays able-body cricket for Uxbridge U15s and won the fielder of the season award. He plays rugby for his school and holds a junior black belt in Tchaijitsu. On the committee at Uxbridge RFC, Matthew is press and publicity officer for the club and regularly submits match reports and updates the club's website.

Mayor's Cup: Dempsey McGuigan, hammer

Dempsey was the youngest person selected to represent Northern Ireland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Dempsey also produced the best performance for the athletics team, making the final at his first Commonwealth Games.

Runner-up: Noorin Gulam, weightlifting

In the last four years, Noorin has gained national titles, including schools U17, U18 and U20. This year, she became British senior champion. She represented Hillingdon and was part of the winning team in 2013 and 2014.

London Youth Games

Teams that represented Hillingdon in last year's London Youth Games and finished in the top ten also had their achievements recognised. This included the archery, weightlifting and trampolining teams, which were crowned LYG champions in 2014.

Two special awards were also given out.

Team Manager of the Year: Simeon Keenan (Archery)

Simeon has been involved in the London Youth Games for more than 20 years as both a competitor and team manager. He has guided the team to become archery champions, the first time Hillingdon has been successful in this sport.

Most Improved Team: Tennis

The borough's tennis team rose from joint last in 2013 to seventh place in 2014, providing valuable additional points to the overall London Youth Games team total for Hillingdon. For the first time last year, the team was managed by coach Paul Seymour and supported with court access at the Virgin Active Northwood Health and Racquet Club.
