THE eastbound section of the A4 will be closed between the junction of High Street, Harlington and The Avenue, Hounslow, while Thames Water carry out essential works to a sewer pipe under the road.

Work will begin at 6pm tomorrow (Friday) and will continue for around ten days.

Michael Wells, supervisor in charge of the works, said: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience this job will cause - we know this is a key route and work will be disruptive, but this is a must-do job.

“If we don’t sort out this sewer pipe now, nearby homes and businesses will continue to have sewage backing up and flooding their homes, which is unacceptable.

"We’ll be working as fast as possible to get this job completed but would urge drivers to leave extra time for their journeys.”

Properties in the area have previously suffered from sewer flooding and the water firm are concerned that, as sewage backs up in the pipe system, it could escape into nearby watercourses, posing a risk to the environment.

The affected pipe is nine-inches in diameter and is located three metres below the road surface of the A4.

Work will not affect the westbound carriageway and clearly sign-posted diversions will be in place.
