PUPILS of Glebe Primary School in Sussex Road, Ickenham, have earned their stripes by successfully arguing the case for a new zebra crossing to be built outside the school.
Earlier this year, Lily Swift, 9, started a petition with the support of more than 50 children from her school council.
It was referred to Cllr Keith Burrows, Hillingdon Council’s cabinet member for transportation, and at a petition hearing meeting at the school pupils explained why they believed a crossing was needed, using hand-drawn posters, speeches and a PowerPoint presentation.
Cllr Burrows said: "It's important that children understand road safety from a young age so I was extremely impressed by Glebe’s well-thought-out petition and presentation.
“They convinced me a crossing could make a big difference to the safety and wellbeing of the school community and I agreed that council officers should start looking into it."
Lily Swift said: "I was just a little bit nervous speaking to everybody. When Cllr Burrows announced the crossing had been agreed, I was overjoyed.
“I am happy because everyone can use the crossing and be safe."
