HILLINGDON'S transport has been the focus of many of the mayoral candidates’ prospective policies but it is the Conservatives who have focused most on the borough.

Heathrow has been an issue of particular contention with Polish prince, John Zylinski, who is running as an independent, stating in April 2016 that he would ban cargo flights to and from the airport.

Caroline Pidgeon, contesting for the Liberal Democrats, is driven to stop Heathrow’s expansion, describing it as ‘unthinkable’.

She said in January that she would even make cars pay to enter a newly formed Heathrow congestion charge zone.

George Galloway, Respect, stated last February that he is against Heathrow’s airport expansion because of toxicity and wants to introduce free orbital bus journeys in Zones 5 and 6.

Both Sadiq Khan and Zac Goldsmith are campaigning for an additional runway at Gatwick as opposed to Heathrow.

Mr Goldsmith, Richmond Park MP, announced in 2009 that he would resign if David Cameron expanded Heathrow airport.

This was done at the time to appease his constituency but Mr Goldsmith as a mayoral candidate clearly now sees Hillingdon as a borough with many potential voters.

The Tories’ concentration on Hillingdon is most likely due to the Conservative ‘doughnut’ campaigning strategy which centres on London suburbs.

Mr Goldsmith revealed this April that he organised for a working group to open that would ensure that the HS2 tunnel will be extended under Hillingdon.
