DEDICATED teachers from Meadow High School walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for a sensory garden last week.

A group of nine teachers, members of the site team and teaching assistants walked from Bowness-on-Solway to Newcastle in five days — raising £1,410 to date.

The team of trekkers aim to raise £2,000 to furnish their sensory garden which so far has had all its materials donated by the community.

Michael Rainsbury, one of the intrepid teachers, said: “The route would normally be 84 miles but with diversions and elevations it became 92 — and we felt every mile of it.”

The sensory garden will be a quiet spot for children with autism to enjoy.

Funds are also going towards the school's long jump track which is in dire need of repair.

What started as an off-the-cuff comment — 'I bet we could walk Hadrian's Wall no worries' — quickly became a reality for the Meadow High School staff.

The walk from Wallsend to Wallsend wasn’t going to be easy but the crew put in lots of training and were thankfully joined by Gary Millard who gave up his holiday to support the team.

Mr Rainsbury continued: “We are very pleased with the amount we have raised to date.

“We spent every weekend training.”

The Hadrian’s Wall team were: Mr Rainsbury, Michael Vincent, Jack Barnes, Jordan Lyall, Alan Manning, Barry Kemp, Mark Szabo, Daniel Hancox, Paul Hornal and Mr Millard.
