Every year, Michael Sobell Hospice, Northwood, holds its annual night-time walking challenge - ‘Ladies in the Night’ on Friday 16th June, where hundreds of walkers come together for one incredible event to help raise vital funds for hospice care, which supports local people in their time of need – and many have a story to tell.

The walk, which was originally started in 2010, will see a sea of walkers setting off from outside Michael Sobell Hospice at 10pm on the night, and in celebration of its 40th anniversary year, will see a special disco fever theme to mark the milestone.

Women, men and children can choose to take on either a five and a half or nine-mile route, and many of them will have a personal reason for doing so.

Simon Hall from Uxbridge said: “I initially became involved through one of my good friends who worked at the Hospice, and the walk has now become an annual fixture for a group of us as we whip ourselves on (not quite literally) to beat the previous years’ time.

“As the route grows steadily a little hillier the prospect of a hot cup of tea and a Danish pastry at the finish line always spurs us on!

“On a personal level, taking part also helps to commemorate my nephew Daniel, who lost his battle with cancer in 2005.

“It’s always poignant to see so many people walking in memory of a loved one, underlining the vital work of Michael Sobell Hospice, not only for those with life-limiting conditions, but also by helping their loved ones to focus on something positive and life-affirming."
