Warning over motorbikes

A WARNING is being issued over the riding of motorbikes in parks and open spaces.

The warning comes from Hillingdon Council, which is urging members of the public to report any incidents.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is illegal to ride a motor-cycle on open space, common land, recreation grounds, footpaths or bridle ways.

The bike can be seized by police and crushed and the rider can receive a fine of up to £1000.

Riding is also prohibited on private land, such as industrial estates or farms without written permission from the land owner.

Ed Shaylor, Hillingdon Council’s head of community safety, said: “The council receives many complaints each summer about off road motor-cycling in the borough.

"We are working closely with the police to reduce the noise nuisance and danger caused by unlawful motor cycling to residents and people using open spaces, for example for walking or cycling.

"The police will confiscate bikes if they have grounds to do so.”

The warnings also apply to using miniature-motos on roads without all the necessary legal requirements, such as insurance, road tax, L plates, driving licence.

Members of the public are being urged to report illegal use of these bikes by calling the Council’s Contact Centre (0800 694 0240) or leaving an anti-social behaviour report on the council’s website www.hillingdon.gov.uk. This is not an immediate response service – leave full details of date, time, place and registration numbers and it will be followed up.
