THE defeated candidates for the Ealing and Hillingdon London Assembly seat have called on the winner to step down from the local council.

Ranjit Dheer and Nigel Bakhai supported the idea of assembly member Richard Barnes stepping down from his seat on Hillingdon Council.

Mr Dheer, who stood in the election for the Labour Party, said: "He can't really do two jobs.

"I know how difficult it is to be on the council and do a fulltime job.

"Mr Barnes is conning the tax payers by holding two posts, and he should step down from one of them."

His calls were supported by Mr Bakhai, the Lib Dem candidate who was defeated in Thursday's election.

He said: "Is he really providing value for money for the residents of Hillingdon?

"I think he should concentrate on his role on the London Assembly and give local people in Hillingdon a new councillor who can look after their local interests."

But Mr Barnes, who represents Harefield ward on the council, rejected the calls for him to resign.

He said: "Being a councillor is not a fulltime job, as everybody knows.

"For two people in Ealing worrying about the state of my health is very gratifying.

"I live in the constituency, I shop in my local ward, and local people have told me to stay on."

Mr Barnes said he was looking forward to starting work at the London Assembly with the new administration, and proimised to continue representing the local people of his ward as well as the residents of Ealing and Hillingdon.

its not a full time job for richard barnes, because he doesnt do anything. and which local shops do you use? which local people have told you to stay on? I will find 100 more harefield residents who dont even know who you are Mr Barnes.
If being a councillor is not a full time job, then why are some of the conservative councillors being paid a thousand pound a week? for doing the equivalent of a paper round!!!

Now that Boris has been elected Mayor it is even more important that Richard Barnes continues to represent his ward on Hillingdon Council. We now have a perfect link between London's central office and our own local Government in Hillingdon, where before we received no support from Livingstone who was only interested in Inner London. Sounds like his opponents are very bitter about getting defeated so heavily in the election and tried to have one last swipe at the victor before they disappear.

Cllr Barnes is a worthy Councillor for Harefield - go and se the improvements in the High Street that he championed, or visit the surgery on a Saturday morning where he is always willing to advise and assist residents. Sour grapes from two idiots who thought that by indulging in a perosnal attack they would take away the abject failure of their campaign? So some Councillors are paid well to do their job? Well how did the Council get £12m in balances this year from a zero balance inherited from the Left in 1998? How did the Council absorb nearly £15m of unpaid Asylum Seeker charges, make savings of £13m and still only raise Council tax by inflation or below? The Council have their faults, and they can be slow and a bot out of touch, but many of the people who give their evenings, weekends, some daytimes and their commitment to serving the community were there doing it when a Councillor earnt £2,400 a YEAR. The fact salaries reflect their commitment is no bad thing - you pay peanuts and you get monkeys - look at the Labour administrations in the 1990's who could not look at a piece of grass without trying to build houses on it. Harefield residents probably do not all adore Cllr Barnes, why would they - all have different opinions on politics. That said he won an increased majority in 2006 in the Council election, and again a few days ago in the GLA election. He is not a super-hero but he cares and he works hard. Attacking Cllr Barnes probably rolls off his back but it is a bit tiresome. Is Cox going to have another hissy fit in Council because democracy has denied his party a win? Bakhai and Dheer (and Cox) are just non-entities - if they are without fault then let them throw stones, but the point is we don't know because no-one has ever heard of two them or ever seen them outside Ealing.

I find it rather odd that Cllr Dheer is calling on Richard Barnes to step down from the Council.

It is odd for two reasons-

1- Richard is an excellent local councillor and is very highly thought of in Harefield.

2- In neighbouring Harrow. Cllr Navin Shah the new GLA members is staying on at the council. Does Cllr Dheer think that he should step down?

navin shah has just got elected. richard barnes has been on TWO bodies for 8 years, hardly worth the comparison.
He is taking the pee and the council tax payers money.

If for the benefit of the confused minority, we use a simple test of voting to judge whether Cllr Barnes is delivering the outcomes to justify his two roles and as stated by Maria, his two incomes, then the following assessment of his votes received as London Assembly Member might be worthy of note:

In 2004, 45,230 votes for Barnes in 2006 - thats 32.4% of all of those cast.
In 2008, 74,710 votes for Cllr Barnes, 42.23% of all votes cast, a majority of over 28,000. That's a 65% increase in his personal votes. Democaracy may be falwed but the rule is if someone wins a majority, be it 1 more or 1 million more than their opponents (on the FPTP system), they win. Richard has done more than that and demonstrated he is well supported and respected. Stop whining about it and see the fact that he got what he deserved and what he works tierlessly for - the support of people he supports day in day out. Ever heard of any Lib Dems or Labour getting such increased support after two full terms?
