Health and Social Care students from Uxbridge College were among volunteers for one of the town’s most well-established Christmas events.

The assisted shopping day gives elderly people the chance to do some Christmas shopping followed by lunch at St Margaret’s Church in Windsor Street.

The students from Uxbridge College and schools around Hillingdon met their guests from minibuses, helped them shop, and accompanied them to lunch.

Maggie Parry, Health and Social Care Lecturer, said: “This event is a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved – the students as well as their guests.

“It was a really valuable experience for our health and social care students, particularly some of those who started their courses quite recently.

“Learning in real situations such as these is an important part of training and education at Uxbridge College – in this case from pushing a wheelchair, to keeping to a timetable, to finding out what their guests wanted and making sure they had a good time.”

St Margaret’s Church, The Chimes and The Mall Pavilions shopping centres, Shopmobility, Hillingdon Council, Uxbridge Forward and The Rotary Club of Uxbridge were among those involved in the event.
