The Ride – consisting of Andrew Smart, 17, Ukesh Gurung, 17, Simon Tajhya, 21, Tianna Johnson, 18, and Simba Nyamfukudza 17 - came second in the popular music category of the WorldSkills UK competition with their blend of rock, rap and reggae.

They were judged on their live performance at the national finals held at the Skills Show in Birmingham.

Performing arts team leader Ray Griffin, who helped coach the group along with music lecturer Ivan Sanz, said: “We are so proud that The Ride achieved silver medallist status particularly when was the competition was so tough. They pulled off an amazing performance which was certainly worthy of the event they played at. It was a fantastic experience for the students and I am sure their involvement in the competition helped support those who have made successful applications to university.”

The Ride were marked on their soundcheck - a cover of Jessie J’s Price Tag – and their performance of Welcome to Jamrock by Damian Marley, as well as an original song written by Andrew called This is Love.

Also in the finals were Newcastle College who had come first the previous two years, but this year reached third place. The winner of the gold medal was North Warwickshire & Hinckley College. Bands from Gateshead and Canterbury Colleges, and the Institute of Contemporary Music, were not placed.

Four members of The Ride, who have been taking BTEC qualifications in music technology and music performance at Uxbridge College, are now on their way to study music at university.

The WorldSkills competition, showcased at the Skills Show, gives young people studying a wide range of areas a chance to compete nationally and internationally.
