STUDENTS and guest performers got together for a unique celebration of the many talents and cultures at Uxbridge College.

The ‘Unity’ event gave dancers, musicians, cooks, hairdressers and beauticians and others a chance to share their skills.

The event at the Uxbridge campus drew hundreds of students who enjoyed the range performances and other cultural offerings.

A group of dance students performed an urban dance piece in tribute to American influences, musicians played reggae numbers in recognition of Caribbean heritage, and another group demonstrated their African drumming skills. Another band also played British numbers including Coldplay’s Paradise.

Catering students cooked and gave out samples of international foods including Greek moussaka and Indian curry, and there were also sweet treats from around the world. Indian head massage and hair braiding was on offer from hair and beauty trainees, and wooden spoon decorated with flags from around the world were also available.

Visiting performers demonstrated Egyptian belly dance, Indian Dohl drumming, and Chinese ribbon dance, and a Chinese calligrapher wrote people’s names in Chinese script.

Adele Carby, Senior Student Liaison Officer, said: “Uxbridge College has a rich cultural mix which benefits everyone with the range of experience and attitudes it brings. Our ‘Unity’ event was a chance not only to celebrate that, but for some of our very capable students to let others see what they could do. As well as offering a showcase for the diversity and skills of our students, the event was also a lot of fun and a chance for everyone to take a bit of time out from working hard.”
