Uxbridge College students were among those volunteering at Uxbridge’s annual Christmas shopping day for elderly and disabled people.

Health and Social Care students worked with people from around the borough who were brought to the town on minibuses, meeting them and accompanying them shopping and to lunch. Members of the Uxbridge College Student Executive decorated the Middlesex Suite at Hillingdon Civic Centre, where a hot Christmas lunch, attended by the Mayor of Hillingdon Cllr Catherine Dann, was served.

The College students were among volunteers from schools and organisations around the borough – including St Margaret’s Church,, Barclays Bank and Shopmobility - who took part in making this long-standing festive event a success.

Maggie Parry, Health and Social Care lecturer, said: “This was a terrific opportunity for our Level 2 students, many of whom have recently started their training to become professional care and support workers, to learn practical skills and meet the kind of people they are likely to work with in future.”

Sharon McCann, Citizenship & Volunteering Activities Co-ordinator, said: “Our student executive did a fantastic job getting the Middlesex Suite looking really festive - it is a big room but the students had it fit for this special Christmas event in no time.”
