An Uxbridge College student has been selected for a bursary awarded through the Helena Kennedy Foundation.

Students who get these awards – bursaries worth £1,500 - may have overcome personal or financial obstacles or difficult circumstances to succeed academically. They will also be progressing to higher education courses.

Chandni Patel, 20, studied A levels at Uxbridge College, achieving the grades to gain a place at university despite difficult circumstances at home. She demonstrated a superb attitude and attendance, and was highly motivated. She was also a valuable member of her group, making useful and supportive contributions. Passionate about her studies, she is described by teachers as “a highly reliable and trustworthy student with an excellent attitude to her studies, and an asset to any classroom”. Chandni achieved an A in sociology, B in ICT and a C in psychology and has just started her degree in sociology at City University.

Chandni said: “I am incredibly happy to receive the award - I was not expecting it at all. My time at Uxbridge College was the best two years of my life and the support was incredible, I am going to miss it so much. If it wasn't for my tutor I wouldn't be in the position I am in now.”

Laraine Smith, Principal of Uxbridge College, said: “Chandni is richly deserving of this award and I would like to offer her my congratulations.

“Like a number of our students this year, she has overcome considerable difficulties outside college and made the best of her opportunity to achieve.

“I am always touched and very impressed by our students’ successes, particularly in circumstances which may not make study an easy option.

“I wish her the best of luck in the future and am grateful for the opportunities the Helena Kennedy Foundation has given over the years to our students.”

Dr Ann Limb, Founder and Chair of Trustees of the Helena Kennedy Foundation, said: “On behalf of the Trustees, I should like to congratulate your college on this achievement.

“This year, as in previous years, trustees were overwhelmed with applications for the bursaries available and it was exceedingly difficult to make choices. “Trustees recognised the students’ difficult circumstances and were moved and inspired by the commitment and dedication they have shown in continuing their education. Trustees also appreciate the tremendous support that the college has given to these students.”
