A student has found confidence and a route to self-expression on his music course at Uxbridge College. Ruben Sewkumar says his stammer, which he has had for as long as he can remember, has sometimes made it hard for him to communicate – but rapping has helped him find his niche. He has written and recorded his own tracks and can perform without completely stammering, which is not possible for him when he speaks.

Uxbridge College students were one of three teams from Colleges from across England selected to showcase the successes of their enterprise societies at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to Government Ministers and Civil Servants. The visit was organised by the National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs (NACUE).

Uxbridge College’s science labs became the scene of a crime while Sir Isaac Newton gave lectures, students made bridges out of paper instead of writing on it, and women took centre stage as leaders in their professions. SEGRO has teamed up with Uxbridge College to help raise funds for a local charity, Michael Sobell Hospice, courtesy of a student challenge. The initiative, titled ‘Max the Cash’, is designed to encourage teams of students to develop a business idea from initial seed funding, and maximise the return on investment. SEGRO provided the initial funding.

Nearly 100 mums, children and even a grandmother or two joined celebrations at Uxbridge College Children’s Centre. The party on Tuesday (May 22), which included face-painting, games, a family zumba session and of course a celebration cake, was held to mark the result of the centre’s first Ofsted inspection in which it was graded ‘Good’. A total of 47 families attended.

Uxbridge College has welcomed three new businesses to its Employer Champion scheme. Apollo Fire Detectors Ltd, Cox Costello & Horne chartered accountants and International Visual Ltd visual merchandising have joined the college to support its vocational and employment skills training.

Enterprising Uxbridge College students have raised charity cash through a range of activities launched on an investment of just £10. Small businesses were set up as part of the Tenner Tycoon challenge selling items including international foods, decorated wooden cutlery, CDs of original music and hand-made jewellery. Another team set up a henna painting service.

A traditional ‘ground breaking’ ceremony has been held at Uxbridge College to mark the start of a £6.5m build. The development at the Uxbridge campus will house engineering workshops and a larger refectory, and add two floors of classrooms and staffrooms for Health & Social Care training.

Young people from Uxbridge College shared their hopes for the regeneration of Hayes at a conference at the Old Vinyl Factory - the site of the former EMI factory in the town. ‘Our Hayes, Our Future’ gave the students based at the Uxbridge College Hayes Campus a chance to contribute to redevelopment plans for the area.

A STUDENT band from Uxbridge College has won the silver medal in a national competition. The Ride – consisting of Andrew Smart, 17, Ukesh Gurung, 17, Simon Tajhya, 21, Tianna Johnson, 18, and Simba Nyamfukudzam 17 - came second in the popular music category of the WorldSkills UK competition with their blend of rock, rap and reggae. They were judged on their live performance at the national finals held at the Skills Show in Birmingham.

Health and Social Care students from Uxbridge College were among volunteers for one of the town’s most well-established Christmas events. The assisted shopping day gives elderly people the chance to do some Christmas shopping followed by lunch at St Margaret’s Church in Windsor Street.
