Pair due in court over terrorism charges

Two men from Mitcham and Norbury will appear in court today for terrorism charges.

Arunachalam Chrishanthakumar, known as AC Shanthan, 51 of Upwood Road in Norbury, and Murugesu Jegatheeswaran, known as M Jegan, 33 of Bond Road in Mitcham, will attend City of Westminster Magistrates' Court along with two other men from Wales.

All four are charged with conspiring together and with others to receive a variety of components, including lap top computers, circuit boards, high-power magnets, lithium coin cell batteries and antenna equipment, between January 2003 and December 2006 intending they be used or having reasonable cause to suspect that they may be used for the purposes of terrorism, contrary to the Criminal Law Act 1997.

The two other men are Jegatheswaran Muraleetharan, 46, and Jeyatheswaran Vythyatharan, 39, both from Newtown in Powys.

They were charged after a counter terrorism inquiry which follows the charges brought against Chrishanthakuma and a man from South Croydon - Goldan Lambert, 30 of Bramley Hill - last June.

Lambert was charged with assisting in arranging a meeting to support Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers terror group in Hyde Park in July 2006.

Chrishanthakuma was also charged with arranged meetings for the group, as well as other charges for receiving £1,500 for the Tamil Tigers and possessing weapons manuals and body armour for them. He was remanded on bail until his arrest in connection with the new charges earlier this week.

The pair will stand trail at the Old Bailey on October 2.
