CAMPAIGN groups have raised concerns at the revelation a proposed crash-landing zone includes a busy motorway junction.
The Sunday Times today revealed if a proposed third runway is built at Heathrow Airport a crash landing zone will include the junction with the M25/M4.
The junction rises by 20 metres, and with most polane crashes happening during take-off and landing, it would be in the danger area for crash landings.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has been advised to look at ways to keep jams on the junction to a minimum, to avoid putting large numbers of people at risk.
John Stewart, the chairman of HACAN, which is against the third runway, said: "I think it's another sign that the government is rushing into these proposals for a third runway.
"It seems they are prepared to compromise safety in order to get it.
"The government did not spell this out during the consultation proper, and we have had to dig away in order to find this information out."
The revelation comes in the same week John McDonnell MP for Hayes and Harlington, called for a public inquiry into the way the consultation was conducted.
