HILLINGDON’S youngsters were in sparkling form at Europe’s largest annual youth sports event, winning medals across four different sports.

The borough was represented by Whiteheath Junior, Newnham Junior and St Helen’s at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, with around 2,500 young people competing at the spring finals at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace .

The two-day event, featuring eight sports, was the climax of the school season of competitions, in which an estimated 50,000 young Londoners took part.

Hillingdon won bronze medals in the Year 5/6 sportshall athletics, thanks to the efforts of Whiteheath Junior and St Helen’s in the KS3 female badminton.

There were further medals in the mini-boccia and the Year 5/6 netball hi-5 competitions. In the netball, Newnham Junior displayed impressive form throughout the day but were edged out in the semi-finals by eventual champions Newlands House from Richmond 3-2 and finished in bronze medal position.

The Hillingdon mini-boccia team finished with a silver in a close-fought competition, with Havering taking gold.

Sportshall athletics, badminton, netball , football, boccia, hockey, inclusive zone basketball and water polo are among 31 sports in the 2015 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games.
