A trio of Wood Green teenagers insist a cycling masterclass from Sir Bradley Wiggins has boosted their confidence on the bike ahead of riding 46 miles as part of the Prudential RideLondon.

Fifteen-year-old twins Samuel and Michael Antwi and 17-year-old Daniella Afriyieasare met the seven-time Olympic medallist and Tour de France champion at the launch event of the Prudential RideLondon, ahead of taking to the capital’s roads on July 31.

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46 is a new event for 2016 for 16-18-year-olds that celebrates the legacy created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and will follow a route on closed roads through the city and into the stunning Surrey countryside.

And for the Antwi twins, who attend Heartlands High School, the event is the perfect opportunity to get London’s youngsters involved in cycling.

“It was great to meet Bradley Wiggins,” said Samuel, who along with his fellow youngsters will be raising money for charity Teach First along the way.

“We remember him from when he won Sports Personality of the Year in 2012 and he is an inspiration to us all.

“I love cycling, and sport is my thing because I love feeling fit and strong, and I enjoy seeing people being introduced to sport and getting them on their feet.

“We’re looking forward to doing the bike ride, but we know it’s going to be tough and our coach is going to put us through a lot of training.

“It is quite daunting but I think we will be able to push through as a team and at the end of the day, we will feel like we have really achieved something.

“It’s really great that companies like Prudential are looking out for young people like us. Nowadays, the youth are really stuck in their ways, but with opportunities like this, it can give them the chance to go out there and experience new things.”

The trio will join thousands of amateur cyclists riding past the capital’s famous landmarks during this year’s Prudential RideLondon.

The largest annual cycling fundraising event on the planet, the Prudential RideLondon has raised over £17million since its inception in 2013.

And St Thomas More School pupil Afriyieasare insists the opportunity to meet Wiggins was the inspiration she and many other young people need to get involved with sport.

“I heard about the Prudential RideLondon in an assembly at school and it was something that my best friend and I were interested in, so we decided to get involved,” she said.

“It was great to meet Bradley because I have never met anyone who has competed at the Olympic Games before, and he has achieved some extraordinary things.

“People like Bradley are role models to us, and if other teenagers can see me getting involved with this ride, hopefully it will inspire them to do something as well.

“Taking on the bike ride is a big challenge for me because I have never cycled that distance before, but I think it will push me to do even more challenges in the future.”
