Former Watford technical director Dick Bate has died at the age of 71.
Bate, whose involvement in football spanned more than 40 years, took his role at Watford in 2006 where he worked for a season alongside then Hornets boss Aidy Boothroyd.
He held various positions in the professional game in a career which saw him have a brief spell managing Southend and also coach England at multiple youth levels.
Bate’s most recent role saw him work alongside ex Watford boss Sean Dyche in a consultancy role at Burnley and Dyche has been saddened by the passing of a close personal friend.
“It’s terribly sad news that Dick, who has been a consultant within our Under-23s and youth academy has passed away,” Dyche said in a statement.
“He was a fantastic coach and coach educator, but beyond that he was someone who cared deeply about the players and the coaches alike.
“A work colleague, but also a friend who had a big influence on me as a person and as a coach, our hearts and thoughts are with his family and friends.”
