Valon Behrami couldn’t prevent Switzerland crashing out of the World Cup as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sweden.

Hoping to reach the quarter-final, Switzerland were undone by a wicked deflection just after the hour which took the Emil Forsberg’s shot beyond Yann Sommer.

They looked to get back into the game but failed to force a leveller, meaning former Watford man Behrami’s tournament in Russia ended at the Last-16 stage.

The deficit could have increased at the last when Martin Lang was sent off for a last man push on Martin Olsson and the referee pointed to the spot.

However, VAR showed the foul to have taken place outside of the box and Switzerland survived from the resulting set-piece.

Sweden and Switzerland were goalless at half-time in their World Cup clash in St Petersburg.

The Swedes had the best opportunities with Albin Ekdal firing over after a poor clearance from Yann Sommer, who later made a good save to deny Marcus Berg.

Switzerland's best opening led to Blerim Dzemaili shooting over.

Sweden took the lead after 66 minutes when Forsberg’s strike from the edge of the area took a wicked deflection off Manuel Akanji and flew past Sommer.

While defeat will be hard to take, Behrami can look back on a productive individual tournament in which he the Swiss progress comfortably from the group stages.

The destructive midfielder played a vital role in the shock 1-1 draw with Brazil in Switzerland’s opening game as he shackled Neymar for much of the game.

Behrami's exit means Ashley Young is the only player with a Watford connection still competing in Russia.
