Former Manchester City and Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell is reportedly on trial with Watford at their pre-season training camp in Austria.

Rodwell is currently without a club after having his contract terminated by Sunderland last month after falling out of favour at the Black Cats, with his last appearance coming against Everton in the Carabao Cup last September.

The former England international, who was thought to be on a £73,000 per-week deal with Sunderland, was left out in the cold by Chris Coleman last season, with the ex-Wales boss telling Rodwell to train with the Black Cats’ u23s.

Rodwell endured a difficult four-year spell at the Stadium of Light after joining from Manchester City in the summer of 2014 and featured just 76 times for the Black Cats, who will ply their trade in League One next season following back-to-back relegations.

The 28-year-old, who scored against Watford at Vicarage Road two-years ago, won the Premier League with Manchester City but has since failed to rediscover the form which saw him touted as one of England’s hottest prospects during his time with Everton.

Having not played for over ten months, the midfielder will now be hoping to kick start his career in the game, and he is bidding to earn a contract with Watford according to reports.

The Hornets are currently well-stocked in midfield, though, with the likes of Etienne Capoue, Nathaniel Chalobah, Will Hughes and Tom Cleverley all on the club’s books, while rumours regarding a potential departure for Abdoulaye Doucoure have also died down.

However, the fact that Rodwell is home grown and available on a free transfer could make him an attractive option for the Golden Boys, as they prepare to build on last season’s 14th place finish in the Premier League this campaign.
