Steve O'Meara continued his impressive start to his boxing career after beating JJ Bird on points at York Hall on Saturday night.

The West Drayton fighter made it four wins out of four since his pro-debut in the Spring with a dominant display against Bird.

Cheered on by more than 300 supporters, O'Meara caught Bird with a series of hefty blows in the second round. But despite landing all the clean punches, O'Meara was stunned to see referee Steve Gray give him the fight by only one round after a 39-38 victory in Bethnal Green.

O'Meara said: "I felt totally in control out there and I couldn't believe any of the first three rounds had gone against me. It seemed harsh and it's taken a bit of the gloss off the win.

"He [Bird] was working hard but wasn't landing any punches on me. He was either missing or getting my glove."

Talking about the turnout, he said: "It was brilliant to see so many people there to support me. It gave me a great buzz."

The 24-year-old light-middleweight expects to be back in the ring by the middle of December after agreeing a three-year deal with Hennessy Sports.

O'Meara believes it was his best performance yet but admits he could have earned a stoppage win if he had pushed himself.

He said: "I think it was my best performance but there is a lot more to come.

"I was boxing within myself on Saturday. Looking back, I feel that perhaps if I had stepped it up after the second round, when I hurt him, I could have stopped him.

"But I'm just looking to keep improving all the time and hopefully I will be fighting for a title by the end of next year."
