Saturday proved to be not-so-super for Australia as a trio of defeats were suffered.

After the football team were beaten by France at the World Cup in Russia and the rugby union side defeated on home soil by Ireland, the cricketers’ loss in their one-day international against England in Cardiff made it an unwanted hat-trick.

Here, Press Association Sport looks back at the troubled treble.

Australia lost their World Cup Group C opener against France 2-1, with Les Bleus’ first goal coming from a penalty contentiously awarded via the video assistant referee system. Just before the hour mark referee Andres Cunha judged Antoine Griezmann had been fouled by Joshua Risdon in the box having watched a replay of the incident at the side of the pitch, and the Atletico Madrid forward then fired the spot-kick past Mathew Ryan. The Socceroos, who felt aggrieved as defender Risdon appeared to have touched the ball before tripping Griezmann with his follow-through, swiftly equalised through Mile Jedinak’s penalty, before Paul Pogba’s late strike condemned Australia to defeat.

The Test series Down Under between Australia and Ireland was drawn level at 1-1 as the tourists triumphed 26-21 in Melbourne. The Irish secured their first away win in Australia in exactly 39 years after producing some of their best rugby of the season, with tries coming from Andrew Conway and Tadhg Furlong and Johnny Sexton contributing a 16-point haul. The winner-takes-all finale to the series is in Sydney next week.

Australia went 2-0 down with three matches left to play in their ODI series against England following a 38-run loss at Cardiff. Batting first, the hosts posted 342 for eight, featuring 120 from opener Jason Roy and an unbeaten 91 from stand-in skipper Jos Buttler. Australia lost early wickets but Shaun Marsh’s 131 gave them a chance before they were subsequently dismissed for 304 in 47.1 overs, Liam Plunkett (four wickets for 53 runs) and Adil Rashid (three for 70) having done most of the damage with the ball for England.
