Purcell Chacony in G minor
Hummel Concertino in G major Op 73 for piano and strings
Sullivan Romance in G minor for string quartet
Elgar Piano Quintet in A minor, Op 84

Purcell has often been described as the finest English composer before Edward Elgar. To open this late summer concert we play his famous Chaconne. Time was, England gained a reputation as ’The Land without Music’ referring to the 200 years between Purcell and Elgar. However, Arthur Sullivan, wrote beautifully crafted, serious music. To question that doubtful perspective on our musical history we have unearthed his charming Romance for string quartet. Howard Shelley has long been a champion of Hummel’s piano music and it is exciting to bring this fine classical composer to the fore. Elgar’s huge Piano Quintet is a masterpiece of the genre . Well done England!
