FIREFIGHTERS are continuing to damp down a massive wood blaze in Uxbridge which sent 4,000 tonnes of waste wood up in smoke.

More than 70 firefighters worked together to tackle the fire on New Years Green Lane, Harefield on Saturday night.

It took nearly eight hours for London Fire Brigade to bring the fire under control when they were called out shortly after 6pm.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Station Manager Gareth Cook, who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control, but this is a protracted incident with crews likely to remain at the scene throughout Tuesday to ensure the fire is completely out.”

Ten fire engines and firefighters from Ruislip, Harrow, Hillingdon, Northolt and other stations in the area attended.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

A spokesman for Hillingdon Council said New Years Green Lane could remain closed to traffic until early tomorrow afternoon, though there is still access to the tip and the scrap metal recycling centre from the Harvil Road end.
